icvvThe Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is Spain’s largest public research institution and ranks third among Europe’s largest research organisations. Attached to the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the CSIC plays a key role in scientific and technological policy in Spain and worldwide.

The CSIC has 120 institutes spread across the country, among them, the Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (Institute of Grapevine and Wine Sciences) (ICVV). Dr. J.M. Martínez-Zapater is a CSIC Research Professor, currently Director of the ICVV and head of the Grapevine Genetics and Genomics (Vitigen) laboratory.

The ICVV is a Research Center devoted to scientific investigation on Viticulture and Oenology. The Institute was created by a joint agreement of the Government of La Rioja (by means of the Regional Agricultural Ministry), the Spanish National Research Council and the University of La Rioja. The Institute is integrated in the European research environment and aims to become a reference center for grapevine and wine research & development.

ICVV has a large collection of genetic resources, a network of experimental vineyards and an experimental winery and is equipped with technology for physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, mass spectrometry, microbiology, molecular biology and –omics works. The ICVV is strongly committed to provide all the necessary elements contributing to the success of the development of this project.

VITIGEN research group is focused on grapevine genetics and in particular, the estimation and characterization of the existing genetic diversity and the study of the genetic mechanisms responsible for the reproductive development  of the vine, focused on characters with impact on the production and quality of grapes and wine.

Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y el Vino - ICVV (Spain) (Universidad de la Rioja)

icvvThe University of La Rioja develops a Doctorate Programme in Enology, Viticulture and Sustainability in collaboration with four Spanish universities and CSIC. This is a research and training program and currently 45 Ph.D. students carry out their research projects in the field of fundamental knowledge and technological applications in enology, viticulture and sustainability.

The Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (ICVV) is a research center dedicated to scientific investigation on viticulture and oenology. This institute was created by a joint agreement of the Autonomous Government of La Rioja, the University of La Rioja and the CSIC.

Three research groups of the UR-ICVV participate in RISEvWISE:

  • UR-BIOTEC: a research group focused on Enological Microbiology and Biotechnology.
  • IN-ENOL is a research group involved in the Analytical Chemistry of wines and innovative technologies for winemaking to achieve premium quality wines with increased safety, and to contribute to the sustainability of the enological sector.
  • CQSE is a group that studies aroma, flavor and mouth sensations of wines. They combine strategies of separation (chromatography), technologies of chemical elucidation (spectrometry of masses) and sensory analysis.

This Institute is integrated in the European research framework and its objectives are to develop new technologies and to generate knowledge in the field of enology and viticulture, and thus contributing to the technological development and the innovation of this agro-industrial sector of viticulture and winemaking.

All the research activities are carried out at the ICVV, which is a new built and equipped research institute including all the required infrastructures for laboratory and field research and fully dedicated to grapevine and wine research. It has a large collection of genetic resources, a network of experimental vine yards and an experimental winery and it is equipped with technology for physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, mass spectrometry, microbiology, molecular biology and -omics works

INSTITUTO SUPERIOR DE AGRONOMIA (ISA), SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE – Portugal Universidade de Lisboa

lisboaThe Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), School of Agriculture, is the largest and most qualified school of graduate and post-graduate degrees in the Agricultural Sciences, in Portugal, and its know-how is recognized nationally and internationally.

Since several decades ISA delivers courses dedicated to Viticulture and Enology, develops experimentation and research on that topics and has a broad interaction with the wine sector in the country as well as abroad.

Within LEAF, the Grapevine & Wine (G&W) thematic line is a horizontal and inter-disciplinary platform for the development of research in the grape and wine sector and on production and sustainability in the wine production chain.

The G&W research activities are reinforced by close cooperation with national or international partners from the academy and the industry. G&W research aims at providing essential tools for stakeholders, including tackling the new challenges imposed by market competition, the need for sustainable and circular production systems, and the adaptation to climate change. The goals of the G&W thematic line are supported by fundamental and applied research activities at LEAF laboratories (chemistry, microbiology and sensory analysis), experimental winery and ISA’s vineyards and in close cooperation with the private sector. The G&W thematic line is able to provide scientific knowledge intersecting studies on Grape production, Wine quality & Sustainability combining competences and objectives at different levels.

Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal) (FCIENCIAS.ID - Associacao para a investigacao e desenvolvimento de ciencias)

FCienciasFCiências.ID –Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, is a Non-Profit Private Association, endowed with legal personality.

It was created in 2017 as a common initiative of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and 6 private companies.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DQB) provides top quality education in Chemistry and Biochemistry, meeting the highest international standards.  It gathers a cohesive and qualified faculty, and approximately 500 bachelor, master and PhD students, including mobility students coming from more than 20 countries.

The mission of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon is to expand the limits of science and technology, transfer scientific knowledge into society, and promote research-based student education.

The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) – Australia

australian instuitutThe Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) is the Australian grape and wine industry’s own research organisation. It supports a sustainable and successful grape and wine industry through world class research, practical solutions and knowledge transfer. Established in 1955, the AWRI is governed by an industry-led, skills-based Board and is a member of the Wine Innovation Cluster located at the Waite Research Precinct in Adelaide. The AWRI has approximately 100 staff, with strengths in viticulture, microbiology (yeast and MLF), chemistry and engineering, which position it to be a great southern hemisphere collaborator and partner in the OENO-CLIM network. AWRI Commercial Services is the commercial arm of the organisation and provides advanced analytical and consulting services on a fee-paying basis.

Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin (ISVV), Université de Bordeaux - France

UBThe University of Bordeaux has 4 large colleges to which are added 3 specific structures, among them the Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin (Institute of Vine & Wine Science) (ISVV).

Situated at the heart of the world’s N°1 fine wine production region, the ISVV is a multidisciplinary higher education, research and development center dedicated to meeting the challenges facing the wine industry of tomorrow.

The ISVV brings together all research, training and technology transfer teams of the numerous partners working in the wine sector on the Bordeaux site. 

ISVV opened its doors in January 2009 and now has a building offering over 10,000 m² of space on the INRA (French National Institute for Agronomic Research) site at Villenave d'Ornon houses some of these research teams and nearly 400 students.

Recognized throughout the world, ISVV coordinates the international Oenoviti network, which brings together some 55 major partners in the fields of research and higher education in oenology and viticulture on all continents and hosts the international journal OENO One, successor in Open Access of the International Journal of Vine and Wine Sciences.

Today, the ISVV's articles of association confirm its special status within the University of Bordeaux, possessing its own Board with representatives of all the Institute's partners. It nurtures strong links with key players in the profession, particularly the CIVB, and develops technology transfer actions with the Inno’Vin cluster.

Università degli studi di Torino (UNITO) – Italy..

torinoThe University of Turin (UNITO) is one of the most ancient and prestigious Italian Universities.
Hosting over 79.000 students and with 120 buildings in different areas in Turin and in key places in Piedmont, the University of Turin can be considered as “city-within-a-city”, promoting culture and producing research, innovation, training and employment.

The UNITO is today one of the largest Italian Universities, open to international research and training.

Within the University of Torino, the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences

(DISAFA), is the main research center in Piedmont, in the field of agriculture, forestry and

food sciences. In the DISAFA, the Sector of Food Science and Technology has been dealing for some decades in food science research and formation at UNITO. It has therefore achieved multiple experiences and skills about the development of qualitative standards for typical agri-food products.

DISAFA is able to host researchers and PhD students in its own premises such as experimental winery, some specific research labs, and some experimental vineyards in various environments with different management conditions.

Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain)

URVThe Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) was created in 1991 by the Parliament of Catalonia from the already existing university faculties and schools. Despite its short life, URV has become a very active university and society leader. It is the leading edge of the Campus of Excellence of South Catalonia, which has defined Oenology as one of the main axis.

The Faculty of Oenology is the only one in Spain that is entirely devoted to this field, being one of the fields of expertise of this young University. It is a reference in superior formation that offer one pedagogic model and a consolidated research in the range of the Oenology and the Biotechnology.

The Faculty of Oenology has an experimental cellar and fields with 7 hectares that are planted with vines and handling capacity of 50000 kg of grapes. They produce about 30,000 liters of wine and use most of this production for teaching (making the wines and monitoring their progress in the cellar is part of the training process), but some of it is used for research purposes. The cellar has facilities for both regular production but also a micro cellar with a capacity of 70 semi industrial vats (100 l/each).

The winery is about 700 m2 and has a classroom to enable the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge, a laboratory where students can implement their practical skills, monitor and analyze the wine they make and a bottling plant with manual and semiautomatic equipment.

Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (Argentina)

uncuyoThe Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCUYO) was founded in 1939 and is devoted to the elucidation of the major issues of mankind, especially considering national and regional life. UNCUYO is currently the largest center of higher education in the Cuyo Region.

It is composed of 12 faculties in Mendoza and has 45.000 students


The University Technician in Enology and Viticulture trains its students to enter the production and wine industry of the country. It is a career aimed at training technicians with the ability to carry out an analysis of the country's wine production and industrial reality, and to be transforming agents of that reality.

Our research group accounts with: fully equipped laboratories for Molecular Biology and Plant Physiology such as electrophoresis equipment, thermocyclers, real-time PCR system, image treatment equipment, microcentrifuges, refrigerated centrifuged, incubation baths and cameras, -80ºC freezer, liquid nitrogen tanks, electric autoclave, magnifying loups, greenhouse, growing chambers, laminar flows, extraction hoods, leaf porometer, chlorophyll meter, solar radiation meter, IRGA photosynthesis system, leaf area meter, among others. The university is currently involved in the following topics:

  • Effect of abscisic acid and jasmonic acid on the content of phenolic compounds in differents red wine varieties
  • Effect of temperature in two climate conditions on the content of phenolic compounds in differents red wine varieties.
  • Psychotropic effect of polyphenolic compounds present in grape and wines in rats and their possible extrapolation to human health

Universidad de Chile (Chile)

capturdifeThe University of Chile is the oldest higher education institution in Chile.

At the Universidad de Chile the teaching of Food Technology dates from the beginning of the last century and in Enology the tradition is more than centennial. In winemaking the selection of native yeasts from Chile, the study of the compounds responsible for color, body and other sensory characteristics associated with the quality of wines as well as compounds associated with food safety (biogenic amines, ochratoxins, etc.) have guided research in the wine area during these last years.

The Department of Agroindustry and Enology works on the techniques and procedures that add value to the primary products of agriculture.

To achieve its objectives, the Department has an academic team of excellence and an infrastructure that allows them to develop projects and activities aimed at preserving, transforming or processing raw materials of agricultural origin, especially the vine for the production of wines and alcohol from quality.

Regarding Postgraduate Teaching, the Department is in charge of coordinating, together with other units of the University of Chile, the Doctorate in Nutrition and Food and the Master's degrees in Agricultural Sciences and Oenology and Viticulture. It has also organized postgraduate diplomas on Technology in Wine Production, Olive Oil Production and Enology and Viticulture.

In the area of ​​oenology, the three research areas are:

  • Oenological microbiology, where the ferments for the production of wine and vinegar are evaluated and selected
  • The study of the agronomic and climatic factors that influence wine production
  • The analysis of processes, treatments and additives used in the production of wines

Bodegas Roda (Spain)

rodaRODA was founded in 1987. Roda uses old vines that provide our wines with extraordinary qualities. Their vineyards are trained in the classic Riojan “bush vine” formation. They avoid chemical synthesis products by using sustainable farming techniques. Harvest in RODA is done by hand, it is respectful and expert.

Bodegas Roda has both, a commercial and experimental winery and vineyards equipped with the infrastructure for research. It also has a germplasm collection of TEMPRANILLO cv with 532 biotypes.

The facilities are custom-made according to the necessities of the RODA wines: adapting in each phase, the number of vats to the selected vineyards in each vintage, a bioclimatic room, product of an unprecedented bet for innovation, and two aging rooms directly bored in the rock.

RODA controls around 20 vine parcels distributed in the best ecosystems of the area, from which every year only the best ones are vinified.

Roda grows 74 hectares of its own vineyard, of which 90% is Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, 3% Garnacha, 1% Mazuelo and 1% Viura. In addition to its own vineyard, RODA controls 84 hectares with an average age of 45.At its facilities in El Barrio de la Estación in Haro (La Rioja), it has a production hall with 17 French oak tubs and a capacity between 12,000 and 20,000 liters.We make an average of350.000 bottles/year.

Bodegas Roda S.A., as part of its business strategy, has since 1998 drawn up a policy supporting scientific research, development and technological innovation as a means towards the continual improvement of its competitiveness and growth, the result of which has been the definition and development of successive tri-annual plans of research and development.

Biolaffort (France)

This includes the registration of no less than 19 international patents.

Over the years, based on the results of its R&D work and progress in biotechnology, the company provides very targeted preventative and curative products that apply our focus on precision oenology. In other words, modern, reasoned and inspired by nature. And always with the aim of providing winemakers throughout the world with natural, high-quality products that allow them to make and keep the best wines to meet the expectations of modern consumers.

Today it continues to innovate in precision oenology, inspired by nature, revealing and protecting the quality of your wines while respecting the distinctiveness of the grape varieties and the authenticity of the terroirs.

Their team expertise relies on microbiology physiology and genetics (yeast and bacteria) as well as chemistry of aromas, phenolics compounds, proteins and polysaccharides. Stellenbosch University (South Africa)

SUSituated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Stellenbosch University has a long history of engagement with the sciences of the vine and the wine, and is in close association with the South African grape and wine industry. Training in Viticulture and Oenology was already offered in the 1880s, at what was then called; the Stellenbosch Gymnasium.

Since then, the scope of research and teaching in the traditional grape and  wine sciences has been expanded and strengthened through the integration of new tools from the biological-, chemical- and sensory sciences. 

Today, the Faculty of AgriSciences comprises 12 departments including the Department of Viticulture and Oenology (DVO) and the Institute for Wine Biotechnology (IWBT). In the latter 2 departments, 66 academics and technical officers coordinate, commission and support training and cutting-edge research in oenology, viticulture and wine biotechnology at Stellenbosch University.

The DVO-IWBT is situated in the JH Neethling Building and has several modern and fully equipped molecular and chemical research laboratories. A greenhouse for transgenic grapevine plants and an experimental cellar are also available.

The DVO is the only University-based department in South Africa that offers under​graduate and postgraduate courses in Viticulture and Oenology. The department has at its disposal well-equipped research facilities, including experimental and commercial vineyards, a small-scale teaching experimental cellar and an industry-scale research and training cellar. Research projects are supported by competitive grants awarded to the department by industry or government institutions. The department enjoys national and international recognition, and maintains contact and research collaboration with many national and international universities and research organisations.
